The one that got away
« on: July 14, 2017, 09:13:15 AM »
Went to a pickers auction yesterday. Lots of door knobs.signs and oilcans. Only thing of interest was a Gale cutout wrench.  wasn't much to look at. Maybe 6in long with the Gale cutout. Figured maybe $60 would buy it. Didn't remember seeing one sell but I miss a lot of wrenchs if I'm not zeroed in on them. Spent 3 hours and they were on lot 5 and the wrench was in lot 13. I figured at least 3 more hours to get to wrench so I left. Didn't take my Rathbones so had no real price reference. Got home and looked it up in Rathbones. Alas last one sold for $ 750. If you ever see me at a auction without my Rathbones please cuff me along side the head.

If you would have asked me even 8 years ago or so about modern technology.... I would have said I hate it all... Leap forward that amount of time and I can't imagine not having my phone on me at a sale to check with my network of friends and buyers when I see something I think might be worth the time to watch sell. I trained myself that is nothing more than a tool, no different than having yours books with you at a sale, or using a tractor instead of horse drawn equipment. It definitely took some adjusting to get used to the fact that all that information was at my fingertips at any time.

BTW, it's probably only about a $200-300 wrench in the current market, but still was well worth staying for. Not a ton of them out there yet.

Hello, Rustcollector & Jim. Thanks for your input re; "Modern Technology as another tool". I struggle when I am out there buying, competing with all of the others with a Smartphone. I guess that it is time to upgrade from the flip phone!!!!! Regards, Lou
