MWTCA membership question?
« on: May 07, 2017, 12:13:43 PM »
Is anyone here a member of the Midwest Tool Collectors Association? They apparently have regional "meets" across the entire country, and a national meet in the spring and fall. The spring meet is in Indianapolis next month, only about 6 hours drive from me, and I was thinking about joining up and checking it out. Anybody been to a national meet before? Is it worth going to? Thanks.
My friends call me Bob. My wife calls me a lot worse.

Maybe. All thr area meetings are on Sunday which I will not attend. Have attended one national meeting several years ago;lots of tools and the tailgating is fun but I have switched mostly to wrench collecting so I maintain my membership but am not active.

I've been a member for quite a few years.  The quarterly magazine the "Gristmill" alone is worth the annual dues.  A reprint of a vintage tool catalog sent out annually.  The meets seem to always be scheduled when we have some other obligation, so I have only made it to a few.   I may try to get to Indy this year (only 3 hours for me).  Join & if you don't like it --just don't renew.  I think you'll stay.

Bob, I've been a member for over 10 years and in my opinion it is the best $25 you can spend. As geneg pointed out, the 4 issues of the Gristmill plus the special publication are worth the price of admission.
I have only been to one national and that was in Kingsport, TN. I enjoyed it, although it didn't have as large an attendance as the ones in the midwest.

Meets generally consist of "tailgating" in the parking lot that starts at a very early hour. Then inside there is a large trade room for more buying and selling and if that isn't enough there may be an auction. Plus some guys are even set up in there hotel rooms.

Displays are a big part of the meets and there will be perhaps 30 or more of them. In addition there are trips planned to interesting places in the area. These are optional. There is also a ladies auxiliary that plan events to keep the wife busy, unless she's like mine and prefers the tool end of things.

NOTE: The spring Meet is in Springfield, Illinois, NOT Indianapolis. It is June 14-17. The link below will get you to the web page you need for more information. If you intend to go and want to stay at the hotel where it is being held, you need to get your reservation in asap.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me

Been a member for some time, can't attend real regular but enjoy the ones I get to.  You are six hours away?   Go to their website,  meets are all listed, may be one closer.  I drool a lot when attending,  always things you never see anywhere save for old catalogs.  Great way to invest some cash!

Okay thanks for the feedback guys, I'll give it a try. Sent my $25 in yesterday. Oh and yes Mike I misspoke when I said the upcoming national meet was in Indianapolis. You are correct, I meant to say Springfield. I've talked the wife into coming along, we are going to take our camper and stay in a campground south of town. I'm especially looking forward to the tailgating, as it sounds like fun and we don't have anything like that this far north.
