Who made this hand drill?
« on: October 29, 2011, 11:39:38 PM »
Not so much a what's it- I know what it is. But I can't see any maker's mark anywhere on it. It's so well built, I would figure whoever made it, they would be proud enough to mark it.

It still works good, too.

When do you think this was made? I'm 53 and I remember playing with this when I was just a pup.

I am not sure but might guess either Millers Falls or Goodell Pratt.
I bet if you take the crank handle off, and take a razor blade and carefully scrape the flat bar between the big gear and the wooden knob, you can see for yourself, for sure.
This is usually where they are marked.

 Here is George's Basement
If you dig in here long enough, you will find it.  George Langford already forgot more about drills than any of the rest of us ever knew.

Oiled and cleaned up those egg-beater drills are sweet, especially for woodworking.   Scott already gave the two best places to check on details.  Have two of these, and use them quite a bit.    I'd grab another in an instant.

If you dig around George's site long enough.........
In the Millers Falls section you can eventually find the two drills George took away from me!

First I found one, that turned out to be the earliest prototype drill, before any production at all commenced.
Then the second one, it was like "Hey George, I can't find this one anywhere? What am I missing?"
It was just a common looking 10 dollar drill I had picked up to use because it was in good shape and, well, George had got my last one already!

So I couldn't find it anywhere.
George says "Yeah you couldn't find it because its not there!!"
I was another, only-one-known, Millers prototype!

Well Gorge has collected drills since before anyone, anywhere, cared about them. And has the largest collection ever assembled, so what the hey.
He was very generous with the swappage.

Not like my Goodell & Pratt at all.   They also put their name on the crank handle.

I suspect it is this one: http://www.georgesbasement.com/mfno135typestudy/No1Type9-2ndX.htm

I had forgotten about Georges site, I remember it now because of the Adams Bros lathe...

I've picked up 3 egg beater drills, restored them, and got them sitting on my spare shelf. When power goes out - or I can't find an extension cord! - those hand powered babies are gonna save the day!

They are good for when there is no electricity.
They are good for when you can't be bothered to find an extension cord.
They are good for when the battery dies on the cordless drill.
They are also good for when the thing you are drilling is fragile and you don't want to demolish it with 1/3 horsepower.

And...It is nearly impossible to drill a hole in your hand with an eggbeater drill...

Something that I know for a fact is not true for an electric drill - P

Do you now?  Saw somebody else do it, right?

Yeah, and if you let your hair grown real long?
And its almost down to your waist and you pick up a 3000 rpm, heavy duty,  3/8", 5amp drill?
And lean a little too far over?
And your hair gets caught in the damn chuck at full power?
An eggbeater will never go rip roaring right up your hair like an old roller blind,
until it delivers a massive blow to the side of your head,
and knocks you flat on the floor, dumbfounded,
looking around wondering what in the hell just happened.

I have one like it but I also found strange bits in the handle-any idea about the bits?

At least two of my egg beater drills came with a few of these bit tucked into the handle.  They work well in wood.  Some are double ended.  I also recently acquired  a wooden tube of this style made for the " 'Yankee' Spiral-Ratchet Screw Driver, No. 30" but I have no idea about the dates of this style.
