Suggestions for a Perfect handle?
« on: July 03, 2016, 11:03:36 AM »
Let me first say that I am totally enjoying the forum so far.  And I'm learning stuff.  For example, I've always loved the style, but I never knew the name "Perfect" before.  I couldn't tell you where it came from, but I've had a Perfect, minus the wood.  I've messed with it a couple times, but it's not at the top of the list of projects.  I started shaping a couple chunks of oak to fit it, but haven't gone much farther.   The shank has two holes, presumably for rivets. I'm not much of a metal worker, so rivets are probably not in the cards.  I was thinking oval wood screws, one from each side.  But I'd entertain other ideas.

What say you?

Thanks, but here is the link I was really looking for. It will lead you step by step in your repair.

Well, I'm not sure my skill set is up to rivets, but OMG!!  That first link is making me rethink the type of wood.  I may have enough purpleheart to do it.  I'm not so committed to the oak, as I've only fit the wood to the shank.  I haven't started shaping the outside of the wood.  The trouble is, if I do purpleheart, I may want to display it instead of use it.

GO FOR IT
Rivets and all.
If you mess it up, try it again.
Wood and rivets aren't that expensive.

The more I think about it, I might just try it.  And truthfully, a lot of my wood is scrap from a boat shop where I hang out.  But I don't have much purpleheart to screw up.

Search the forum for Perfect Handles and for H D Smith. You will see plenty to inspire you.
I did my first one with Balsa wood just to get a feel for it, and used a brass toilet float rod to make rivets.
Scott's method is tops. http://users.snowcrest.net/kitty/sgrandstaff/screwdrivers.htm
