Molasses question
« on: July 02, 2016, 10:43:47 AM »
I often read from fellows who soak tools in molasses.
Can someone give me the full skinny on the process, beginning to end.

find a container, I use a 55 gal drum, a kitty litter container, and a 1 gallon ice cream container, all plastic.
I get animal grade molasses from a local feed store or rural king about 9-10$ a gallon. Then about a 10 parts water to 1 part molasses, don't need to be exact. keep it in a warm spot and a cover or "things" may jump in. then depending on how rusty the part or tool is and the temperature is a week to a few months and the rust is gone! I leave stuff in over the winter cause molasses will not eat the metal, smaller tubs I take out side in the sun, it speed the actions. I needs to be free of grease and mud, both will seal the rust from the molasses. Have a rinse bucket handy for when you pull them out. Also once rinsed it will flash rust. So I have phosphoric acid diluted and soak part / tool in for a few minutes 5-20 minutes depending on how strong the mix is. I have a 55 gal drum with it in, you have to mix it up then put your part in or get a smaller bucket full out.  After the phosphoric aka metalprep is allowed to dry then depending on what it is I wipe it down with lacquer thinner and paint or clear.  The best / cheapest phosphoric acid is from kleen strip.http://www.kleanstrip.com/product/phosphoric-prep-etch .

One summer I took a very large 8' by 4' electric enclosure put a cheap tarp to line it and made a big/long part deruster.
for wrenchs and small thing a bucket works well. But it is hard to fit car part in there!
