Passed on a free monarch lathe...
« on: April 22, 2016, 10:54:33 PM »
Well today I passed on a good deal. It was a monarch 22x48 lathe. It's early 40s an was fully rebuilt in about 2010 an been maintained since.

Work has been cleaning up shop an making room for another cnc machine. They have multiple manual lathes this size range an this one went goodby. They had it listed locally for a crazy number with no offers. The cnc gets delivered next week so they pretty much said who ever can get it out can have it.

I an two other guys considered it. It would be great but I would have to move it once home. I don't have electrical for it. I don't plan on being in my parents garage for ever. I don't really have a true use for it. It also didnt come with any tooling but for free it worked well. So basically it was a nice want but not realistic.

An that is my sob story for the day :(

And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

Agreeded. The deal just wasn't right. I've passed a few deals like this but the kid in me always wants to. The key word there is "want". I mean who wouldn't want early 40s metal lathe, ok so maybe most people my generation couldn't even tell you what it does. I would still like it.

Back when I lived in Chicago i got a lot of good stuff from my buddy. He did salvage an scrap. He would find some good stuff quite often, sometimes for cheap/free but that was rare. Most stuff he got wasn't worth much. The good stuff thoe was worth the find.

Anyway if I had my own place I would of took it. Eventually I plan on getting a few welders, plasma cutter, saws, drills, mills, lathes, press, etc. Then again That sounds expensive.

Years ago at my former job we scraped a very big scoop loader that had been converted to a fork lift. It had a 3,000 pound lead weight on the back of it. The lead block was sealed inside a steel box. The local scrap yard offered my job 30 cents a pound for it and we had to deliver it to them. My job said anybody could have it, but nobody wanted it because how would any of us move it around at home. It went for scrap.
