Almost a what's it....whats missing?
« on: October 11, 2011, 08:57:00 PM »
I have been hanging on to this Wilton wood vise, but something is amiss. It quick releases just fine, but wont grab and pull tight unless you twist the oval shaped "thing" that the pencil points towards.

Is is missing a button? Something else?

Thanks in advance.

It looks like that piece would just spin with the threaded shaft unless you hold it. I don't know what's supposed to in there but it looks like a simple stud would cause it to brace against the piece next to it and keep it from spinning. I'd like to see what's actually supposed to in there.

Hold on a minute. That's the bottom that we're looking at and that's supposed to mount to a table. I don't see where it's supposed to mount. Could that have something to do with the base?

Clean and oil it up. See if that doesn't work.
If it won't, try a soft rubber plug in the hole.  Something that just barely drags the threads below.

Yes, it was photographed upside down, sorry should have mentioned that.

I'm hoping someone has this vice and could chime in or provide a photo. I could not find an exploded view on the web. I feel the oval casting with the  hole in it has some "relieving" surrounding the hole for a reason. Perhaps for a spring clip to hold something in.

I'm thinking that should have a lever or knob, for the quick set feature.

I'm guessing no one here has this vice and can identify the missing piece?

Well, I don't own a vise like that or even use one like that but, i did find this website which shows what I think you are missing!

I have the Wilton quick release bench vise. At minimum, your's is missing the plug and the spring that presses the plug toward the screw.

Here's the patent drawing.

Well thanks to all that contributed to the solution. I have fashioned a prototype now and hopefully I won't be pursued for patent infringement.  :-)

A hard plastic cap, held in place with a metal strip, and tensioned with a hose clamp proved the concept. I'll now make it less redneck.

I'm surmising that the wording "quick release" in these posts confirms that this vice does not winch out but only winches in as does mine.

Much appreciated!!!!
