tools from warren, mass?
« on: January 21, 2016, 09:25:16 AM »
Hello again,
I have a guy that's looking for any old tools that say warren, mass on them. Does anyone know if any wrench brands came from there?

Bird,    my wife is from Warren, we live a few towns from there now.

a year or two ago, there was a tool on bay from Warren, MA,  and I can not remember what it was, I am thinking a spoke shave,
but I will not swear to that.  I should have written down his name.  it was not a company. so the tool had to be from the mid to late 1800's.

I can assure you that it was not a wrench, as I would have jumped on it, or if I could not get it, I would have printed out the info.

is the guy from Warren, Mass.  ???

The only tools I'm aware of from there are of the wood working sort.

bird;   it was a spoke shave that I saw for sale.  it was made by the Humphrey's Tool Company in Warren, Massachusetts.

which I believe was owned by Frank A. Humphrey from Worcester, Massachusetts which is only 1/2 drive today. but back in
the 1860's, travel was a lot different that today.  perhaps a 2 1/2 hour jaunt to his factory.  maybe longer ???
there may have been a train then.  tracks run along the Quaboag River in Warren where most factories were located.

some patents to check;  spoke shave, patent # 257,870 May 16, 1882

the only tool listing that I found were made of mostly wood.

one was listed as "a heel shave holder"

other patents to check;
348,674
349,102
618,880
623,156
623,786
346,379
261,353

today I found a closed listing on bay, closed on Jan. 12, 2016   opening bid $70.00 free s/h (NO BIDDERS)  seller; numnum.434
Nellysford, Virginia

F.A. Humphrey cavity shave 10 1/2" type 3, rosewood handle

I hope this helps.

That seller would be me!! :) I have that shave, and I'm not willing to give it up for cheap.... it's a hard one to find!!! That guy was interested in that shave, which is how I came to know him. He tried to talk me down, I offered him it for 60, but was too much for him. I've seen it called a "cavity shave." I bought it for 45.... such a shame I'll have to keep it awhile longer!!!! I'm assuming he is from warren, but I guess I'm not sure of that. I told him I'd keep my eyes out for anything with warren mass on it. That's why I was asking about it.
cheers
