Proto 3/4 Ratchet For Father's Day
« on: June 06, 2015, 11:27:58 PM »
So for Father's Day, wife said look for something you want, and you can get it if it was not to much.
So I had been keeping an eye out. I was looking around on fleaBay for different things.
Started looking at 3/4 ratchets, and came across one that was listed as mfd. unknown.
But I could tell it was a Proto, it was a or best offer deal. So I made an offer thought well they
may or may not go for that and went on, later when I checked it, it was over thought someone else got it, but got an email latter, and my offer was excepted. Cool got it for less than half what other Protos where going for. When it came in the mail, the drive was pointing the wrong direction,
and very faintly the face plate said Proto 5649BL, guess they did not see it.

I don't know how original it is, but if it is, all of the black finish is gone, don't know what all that is about. The screws where really loose and the gear moved around a lot. I took it apart, and it was caked with grease inside. I like to use grease but not that much. Got it cleaned up, lubed it up lightly with grease, and reassembled it with the diver pointing the right way, it snugged right up, and the gear does not wiggle around like it did. The finish may be gone, but after I got it cleaned up, it looks, and works great. I really like it, makes a nice Father's Day gift, Thanks to my wife and son.

Here is a video I made about disassembling, lubricating, and reassembling, the Proto 5649BL. I posted it over on Bonneyman's Inside a ratchet: How they work thread. But I thought it mite be a good idea to put it here to.

I have bought some Proto ratchets in the past that had the cover put on backwards hiding the name. Some times both sides of the side cover are stamped. Plomb and Proto parts interchange with the same model number. A lot of P&C parts fit Plomb and Proto models also. My Plomb 3/4 inch models have removable drive plugs which turns them into female drive models. One of my Plomb 3/4 inch models has a P&C drive plug in it.

Yeah when I first saw it I thought the reason they could not tell what it was (They said it mite be a Evercraft ratchet?) was because the plate was backwards. But when I got it, it was on right, the markings where just really faint, just the drive was on backwards. It is only marked on one side, and it's all male no plug, feels strange to type that. Like I said I don't know how original it is, but it's not a big dill to me. I like it all the same.
