Can anyone direct me to a picture of a Stillman's saw set being used?

Lewill2

Don't have a picture but I think the star wheel sets the tooth size/thickness and the screw sets how much set you get to the tooth.

I'll bet it's in Datamp.  I don't have mine handy, but what's the pat date?

Try this page:

You'll find the patent papers including the patent drawing.   Looks clear enough for me, at least.

If I remember correctly, there are two different sizes.  I have the smaller one which seems to be more common.

I believe you are correct on both counts, I have a small one also.

Lewill2 and mikeswrenches.  I'd be interested to know what lengths your saw sets are. I know I have one and possibly 2, but , if I do in fact have two they are most likely the same dimensions or I'd like to think I would have noticed the difference. It seems a bit strange to me that the patent drawing make no reference to dimensions. I may be out to lunch but I thought that the measurements would be a requirement of the patent office.

turnnut

measurement requirements by patent office ?

I do not believe that is a requirement, take a Coes wrench for example, they get a patent
on the design, not the size.

they will take one design and perhaps make about 8 sizes of that same design and do
not need a patent for each size.

having read many patents, I can not remember any that gave dimensions.

Thanks turnnut, I think that answers my question.

Lewill2

Mine is about 6 inches tip to tip. I'll have to dig a little to see if I have another one.

mikeswrenches

Mine is 6 1/4 inches overall.

Stillman sizes;

on ebay, someone is selling a 2 page ad for saw sets, in the ad there is also the Stillman
  saw sets.

a no. 0  for hand saws, $3.50 per dozen. weight per dozen, 3 pounds
  ( approx. 4 oz. each )
a no. 00   for crosscut saws.  $7.00 per dozen. weight per dozen, 6 pounds
  ( approx. 8 oz. each )

the smaller on is 1/2 the weight.

2 sizes makes sence as the crosscut saws teeth are greater than the hand saws.

no. o has a flat at the end of the handle and the no. 00 is round at the end.

  ebay # 1509927559647

I hope that this sheds a little light on the subject.
