Made a kid happy with a hand plane
« on: December 07, 2014, 03:02:04 PM »
Tool related so I figured ahh why not ramble on an share.

Today I was working on a side job. All I did today was install a pre hung door an some molding. Over the past two weeks I've took out carpet an molding, done 1600 sqf of engineered hardwood floor(whole house), install two bathroom vanities an toilets(uncle helped with toilet an sink). I still gotta wait for the homeowner to finish staining the rest of the new doors an molding.

For the past three weeks whenever ime there there's a 5th grader watching my every move. I was using my grandpas hand plane to trim a hair off the bottom of door. I could of got my sander out but for just a little bit it's easier to grab a plane. Well the kid found the plane the coolest thing ever. As I was leaving today he wanted me to show him , his younger brother an mom how it works. I was like ok no problem(secretly hoping it takes no more then 30 seconds)

Kid really found the plane the coolest thing ever. He found the way the shavings came out amazing. I remembered I just got a plane in a box of stuff off Craigslist. wasn't gonna give my grandpas plane away but that one didn't matter. I went to my truck an grabbed it. It was Stanley handyman H1204. It wasn't in Good shape cosmetically but works ok. Not great but it still works. It's not a antique but still old. The mom said he could have it so I gave it to him.

I probably didn't start a lifelong tool collector, but who knows. After all it is the season of giving.

And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

That was a good deed, and you never know for sure what small act of kindness or which words of encouragement will have a positive impact on a young child.  I hope he becomes a life long hand plane enthusiast!

Good for you!  Not many kids anymore get the chance to see this kind of work being done, so they don't learn.

Neil, for your own piece of mind, next time your with the youngster with your plane,
stop and explain the safe use and storage of his new/old tool, it would not hurt if
his mother also listened to you.   just a suggetion, Frank
p.s. very nice jesture on your part. too many people do not spend enough time with youngsters.

Neil, What you have done here is exceptional.  Not only have you stimulated an interested young mind, you have made a dream come. You truly have promoted serious interest in the craft with this single gesture.  Way to go!

Typically, we find that the "experts" are so proud and pretentious that they guard their craft with exorbitantly high prices for their " stuff " ( informational and material ) that potential new crafters are discouraged away and choose not to participate.  Then we wonder why interests in the crafts are dieing.  Recently, I attempted to grow into a "machinists" disposition and learned from the "experts" that it "requires" an investment of several thousand dollars and a million years to learn - as per those who might have been mentors.  I also attempted to learn engraving and was told that it would require a several thousand dollar investment for equipment, and formal classes were an additional several THOUSAND dollars.  How proud and exclusive can these "experts" be?

No, they are not going to give away their bread & butter skills and create competition, but they are also not going to encourage new enthusiasts.  I can only say, "the heck with their pride" as I attempt to teach myself the crafts.  And I too would "give away" all the skills that I have acquired to encourage an enthusiast.

Neil, your contribution of that plane is worth more than the Thousands that the "experts" charge for information about their craft.  I am proud of you.  Thank you.   Ralph

Good on you paying it foreward. You've helped a budding woodworker on his way.

Urge him to go down to the library and see if they have any beginner's woodworking books.  He sounds like he's ready to take off.
