Here is the combination straight -cross pein. I think I will keep this one for now, but I am pretty sure I have a couple more out there in my garage.

This one is kinda small, how small of a hammer do blacksmiths use?

The head is 5-1/2" long, and 1" wide at either pein.

PM me with your info and which ones you can use. No charge for budding artists.

chilly,

That is a welders scaling hammer, although many people call them straight/cross pein hammers. They are all small like that.

Real handy though as they are good for texturing forged items.

PM Sent!

As far as how small a hammer a blacksmith uses... all depends on what we're making! I imagine we can use hammers just as small as you do, if we're working small pieces. Hot steel is just as soft, if not softer than room temperature gold...

The smallest hammer I currently have, is this little ballpein. Which comes in handy! And is great for making copper rivets out of electrical wire for my knife sheathes.

I focus more on the blacksmithing right now, but I do plan to branch out down the road and work with silver, and various other white metals. I've made a few bits of jewelry out of the cases of stainless steel bolts I've picked up :P

Your ball pein is bigger than my jewelery tools  - about 4 or 5x the weight, I would guess. My silversmithing hammers are in that range.

On this link, all of the "squash" handled hammers would fit in a kitchen drawer.

It's a totally different feel.  I'll send a fold formed copper leaf that I made with the humongous hammers.

Oh, yeah, cost is applied inversely - those hammers all cost between $40.00 and $125.00, with an average cost just North of $60.00.  Farriers hammers, the metal handled one is an example, cost an arm and a hoof. Almost all are custom made, and you often will have to shell out more than $100.00 for a good one.
