Lane's Unique socket sets
« on: September 06, 2014, 03:46:12 PM »
Is anyone familiar with Lane's Unique hex drive socket sets of the 1920s? They were packed in leather boxes w wood ends.     Chuck Garrett

What would you like to know?

My set has 6 hex sockets (unmarked), a 6" extension, a screwdriver bit and the ratchet, packed in an 8 1/4" wood box that has leather? covering around it except for the ends.

All I've got is a ratchet with one socket. Ratchet marked with Jan 14,08 patent date.
In second photo Lane is fifth rat from left in second row.

Got out my magnifying glass and the words forged into the flat handle of an open ratchet says  WILL B Lane, Chicago, Ill, Pat Jan 14 08.   What is the pat #?  The pics are on page 531 of the ca 1924 Knapp & Spencer Catalog # 27.  Wish I had the whole catalog but just have the 2 pages(1 sheet).Haven't seen them before.  How scarce are they?    Chuck Garrett

Jimwrench,

I see that you have a lot of Ratchets, and talking about the Lane rachets,

I recently cleaned up a ratchet that was in one of my "caves"  it is a HEXALL by R.F. Sedgley
Phila., PA  Pat. May 1, 1917   patent # 1,224,223
has a 1/2" hex

I was wondering if the Lane older ratchet is close to the 1917 HEXALL ratcher ?  do you
have one to compare them ?

you have an impresive collection there, Frank

The Lane patents & ads that show some of the sets' evolution have appeared in the MVWC Newsletter over the years.

Sedgley was a totally different company, with its own set of patents & products.  Sedgley also made pistols.

The ratchet in the K&S catalog uses the spring wire and the first set lists the leather tool box and 2 screwdriver biades, socket range 1/4 to 5/6 while the second set lists a 7 " extension and a substantial box with a socket range of 5/16 to 11/16  for a Ford. 1st set has 7 sockets and the Ford set 6 sockets.

Are there any Lane ratchets that use the lever per his patents rather than the spring wire?   Chuck Garrett

Another question:  Are there any Lane ratchets that have the lever like his patents instead of the spring wire?   Chuck Garrett

yes, I know that Lane and Sedgley are not the same co. what I was looking for, is if someone has
both a Lane and a Sedgley ratchet to see how they compare to design.

from the pictures, it looks to me like Sedgley took some of Lane's ideas to build theirs, that
is where a side by side comparison would be ideal.

Sedgley was way after Lanes.

I have both but unfortunately I have no idea where the Hexall is. Try looking on AA he might have a picture of both.
