It should be stamped on the top of the main bar behind the stationary jaw. Stephens Patented Vise Co NY $ different patent dates, I can't read the earliest one on mine but others are April 12 1868, October 26, 1869, July 19, 1870. We talked about them here before. It should be spring loaded to the closed position.

that is a nice find, I have seen many types during my time, but never one like that.

can you imagine a national vise convention at a state fairgrounds ?

where is the vise squad ?  calling all vise owners.

Quote
Vice vs. vise

In the U.S., the word for the clamping tool comprising two jaws closed and opened by a screw or lever is spelled vise. Outside American English, the vise spelling rarely appears. The gripping tool is instead spelled vice. This word of course has several other meanings in all varieties of English, including (1) immorality, and (2) an undesirable habit. For these senses, vice is so spelled even in the U.S.

So when Turnnut advertises his convention he better be careful. He might end up having a group of immoral people with bad habits, eh Papaw?

Chilly,
" he might end up with a group of immoral people with bad habits."

Dictionary.com
British dictionary definitions for habit;

(#7) the customary apparel of a particular occupation, rank, etc, now esp the
costume of a nun or monk.

(#8) also called RIDING HABIT, a woman's dress.

p.s. the vise convention should only be advertized in the United States of America and no person
      will be allowed on the field without steel or brass VISE.

Chilly,
" he might end up with a group of immoral people with bad habits."

But if he supplies those people with new habiliments they would be re-habilitated, no?
