Millers Falls No. 2 hand drill
« on: July 07, 2014, 08:03:18 PM »
Millers Falls "eggbeater" hand drills were highly regarded for their durability, excellent design and fine workmanship.

It was the No.2 model that secured the reputation of Millers Falls as the manufacturer of superbly designed and engineered hand drills produced in conformance with high quality standards. Many woodworking hand tool scholars -- and long time users -- maintain this hand drill is the finest ever designed and produced.

Following are some Millers Falls No.2 hand drills I have owned and used:

EARLY 1900s MILLERS FALLS No.2 HAND DRILL

with adjustable friction roll

Main Handle - rosewood, natural polish, hollow (containing six wood boring points) with a narrow waist, flared and flat screw-off top.
Side Handle - rosewood, natural polish, egg shaped, detachable.
Crank Handle - rosewood, natural polish, small mushroom.

LATE 1930s PRODUCTION MILLERS FALLS No.2 HAND DRILL

GENERAL NOTES

Adjustable friction roll to equalize bearings - this was the Millers Falls description in their catalogs.

Thanks Ralph. They do turn up on e-bay every so often - except for the egg shaped side handle model which is rare.

I have collected and used a half dozen Millers Falls and Goodell-Pratt eggbeaters, and enjoy using them, but have never seen one with the original egg shaped side handle, outside of a book.   Those look great, too often they got abused.

Thanks John. This is the only No. 2 with an original egg shaped side handle I have ever owned.

Here are a few hand drills I have picked in the last few months:

The bottom right is a no. 3, the bottom left is an unknown so far. I havent cleaned the dust off, so maybe....

The earlier one with the egg handle is the most complete I have found.  Funny thing is, the egg handle feels funny in use. It would probably feel better if it wasn't so close to the body of the tool.

This isn't a Millers Falls but it sure would be sweet to add to a tool collection. Got it on my watch list to see if and/or what it sells for.

Auction ended with 8 bids, top bid was $204 and change but it didn't make reserve price so it didn't sell.

Relisted starting bid $75, still shows it has a reserve.

The older No. 2s are very nice.  I happen to prefer the North Bros. drill of this size, but this particular drill is not very common.

Then this guy made these two and put them up for sale, just a little over the top but really impressive.

This link tells a little more about the maker, Abiel Rios Wong.
