Odd hammer head

I have an old bag of hammer heads and I pulled this one out today. I was rusted as can be so I wire-wheeled it. Doesn't have any markings on it but the handle opening and a slot between the claws has me curious as hell. I looked at the slot with a jewelers loupe and didn't see any teeth marks from a saw blade. Anyone seen one of these? Handle opening is 5/8".

They tried making hammers with the handle made from fiberglass rod for a while, didn't work well, the heads tended to fall off, even with the epoxy. One sometimes wonders if the old timers knew more than they were telling us ;P

How bout that slot, to me it looks like it was cut but in the 2nd pic you can see how squared off the end of the cut is.

Besides solid glass rods, they also made hammers with round steel tube handles, which also failed.
 Plain glue in a round hole, just won't do to hold a hammer handle on, I don't care what kind of super schamntzy glue they think it is.

Never liked these at all.  But a high end German tool company, Picard, is currently making both.
