Diamalloy Handyboy (pliers-wrench) question
« on: March 10, 2014, 04:15:46 PM »
I've seen plenty of pictures of Handyboy's online, but I'd never handled one in person until this one landed in my lap a few months ago. I remember being surprised at first about the size....I'd always somehow assumed they were bigger. This one measures 6-1/2 inches long. My question is, are there other size versions? Or any other variations I should be looking out for?

I have a modern Chinese knock-off that is 7" long. It doesn't have the raised lips on the plier end.

There was indeed a larger version.  One of the first things I sold on fleecebay was a pair of them.  Some have the raised portion on the jaw and some are plain.  What I can't remember is how long they were.

Having a pair in the box is quite unusual.  Nice find!!

I had a pair of the the Chinese ones that were marked CTF.  I hate to admit that they were very well made.

Sweet, wonder what the box is worth.

The pair I have looks the same as yours but is 5 3/4"
and just has US written on it.

We had a thread on these before but I don't remember if it was before the melt down or after. I have 3 pair, I think one is 5 something long and 2 are around 6 1/2 inches long.

In reply to the original question, there is a DH18 that is nominal 8 inches long  (actually a tad over 7") , and a DH15 that is just under 6" long.  Neither are anywhere near as common as the DH16 and other nominal 6" manifestations.

Thanks for the info and pictures guys. Looks like I will need to keep my eyes peeled for those other sizes.

I have a pair of the ones HJE sells. Think they are CTF. They are kinda nice.

An equivalent (or maybe a private label version of the same) was sold by Ka-Bar as part of their Marine Mate kits.  It came with the plier/wrench and a rigging knive, either a fixed blade or a folding one with marlinespike.  The Ka-Bar is marked Made in USA.  The HJE ones I have are marked CTA.  No country of origin, and HJE would tell you if it was USA.
Frankly, I find these tools way more useful than the more modern folding multi-tools.  I've got one on the boat, one in the car, one in the kitchen and some spares!

The one I have of those works decent.

Those Ka-Bar kits fetch a mighty steep price on Ebay when they (occasionally) show up. Too rich for my blood anyhow.
