light cover?

This thing appears to be a cover for a light, maybe for a ship?? Its heavy, about 1 foot diameter and almost 2 feet tall.  There are no numbers, letters or symbols on it

Could be from a buoy, great looking garden light.

Similar are seen in the UK - ships navigation lamp - white is usually a mast head light  - from a sailing or steam ship..

Early, oil lamps, usually have a chimney on top, to let the smoke out. Later, electric ones, usually have a cable inlet at the bottom with a grommet or shroud to keep water out, and no chimney.

A large copper ships masthead electric marine light, made by Meteorite and dating to around the 2nd quarter of the 20th century circa late 30's / 1940's.

The light has 3 brass mounting lugs to the base and it's original 2 part 180 degree clear glass Fresnel lens.

The hinged cover with central bale is secured via 3 wing-nuts and hinges open to access the interior which has it's original bayonet lamp holder.

The front of the lamp has a copper plaque reading 'METEORITE / ??63' (first digits are obscured by solder).
 
The light is of good proportions and would make a wonderful stand alone decorative piece or indeed, as a working lamp (would need to be rewired, but this would be straightforward).

Condition :  Overall fair to good - Has all the character that would be expected on a genuine working ships lamp after a hard lifetime at sea, with  knocks, bruises, soldering and wear & tear commensurate with age and use.

Depth : Approx 10 1/2" / 26.8cm excluding brackets
Width : Approx 10 1/2" / 26.8 cm excluding brackets

I don't know much about lights but the scrap metal there is probably five bucks. Its still a cool piece. For five bucks I would of picked it up an it would sit on my shelf. I couldn't tell anything about it but it looks cool.

  The brass ones sell for $100- $200+ depending on the Mfg.  It wouldn't be a Perko would it,  That's the one you want.                                                      4

My parents' house originally had several similar outside light fixtures that had originally been on tugboats in the San Francisco Bay and were reworked to accept electric lights.  My younger son has them now.  They're pretty neat.  No Fresnel lenses, though; just curved glass.

My doctor long ago had five or six of these for decoration in his waiting room.   I would study them while waiting to be called, and determined they were original working lamps.   Said he had picked them up in Boston in the 40s when he was in Med. school.   Always liked the utility and rugged look they have.
