This Showed Up In My Mail Today
« on: December 19, 2012, 08:32:13 PM »
Received this  great commemorative wrench today.  Excellent quality!!  Don't know who cast it, but a very nice job.  All you guys interested in wrenches should consider joining the Missouri Valley Wrench Club.  For 15 bucks a year it is a bargain.  They put out a nice news letter 4 times a year.

The wrench was designed by Everett Sheffield and is a copy of The Deering Pattern Wrench that was made by Deering Harvester Co. for inclusion in the toolboxes on their farm implements.  This is  common style of wrench that was also made or sold by Dempster Mill, Wyeth, Henry & Allen Co., WAITH Co., Harwi, and Simmons Hardware, and others.  Everett says that "there are 25 to 30 or more different names or part numbers found on this wrench."

A commemorative wrench eh?   Is it normal size?   Aluminum or brushed  iron?   Another thing to watch for!!

Heres a photo of the 2011 MVWC commemorative wrench. The 2011 series was a numbered series from 1 to 100. It was cast from some material that I have forgotten the name of. Not steel or aluminum. I too recommend the MVWC. Its a group of down to earth wrench collectors that are fun to associate with.

John,

The 2012 is 5 1/4 in. long.  I'm not sure of the material.  It is non-magnetic so I'm guessing maybe a zinc alloy like perhaps Zamac.  I don't think it's SS, that would be a little pricy, and it doesn't seem heavy enough for SS.  Bus may be able to tell us.

Correction  -- MVWC dues are $20.00 per year in the U.S.  -- a copy of the membership form is on the mvwc.org web page.   Stan Schulz, MVWC Newsletter Editor.

Stan remembered that Everett said material in these wrenchs was such that they could actually be used as wrenchs. That jogged my memory and I recall that also. Some newer alloy I guess.
