Can you Judge the age of a Tree
« on: June 09, 2011, 07:47:10 PM »
A strom came thru tonight and took my favorite oak tree down. I am guessing it is/was over 200 years old. It was growing along a creek bank. The tree trunk at the base is between 5 & 6 feet in diameter. So I am trying to figure out how old the tree is without counting rings once it get cut up.

It took 2 electric poles down on my property along with the cable and phone. Electric still works and so does the phone so I guess the fun will start cleaning things up. Cable is out so I guess I'll have to do without the old TV for a few days.

Most Arborists will have a tree core tool that you can screw in to the center and pull out a "core" showing all the growth rings. Then you count them as 1 ring is made for every year of it's age.
Do this at DBH, that means diameter breast height.
All measurements are taken here in the industry.
This will Not kill the tree, and plug the hole with a filling most Gardening stores have.
All historical trees are done this way.

You will also be able to tell accurately the years back that were drought years.

Also,,,an Oak tree has to be at least 50 years old to produce acorns. Remember this.
