Tools- forgot I had this one!
« on: October 13, 2012, 02:06:20 PM »
Rooting around the stash for something else, I uncovered this German made multitool I had forgotten!
Brass, made in Germany, but no maker name. Body is 3 1/16" long, about 5/8" diameter, and unscrews to show 5 bits that fit in the body when threaded closed. Two flat blade screwdrivers, one awl, one screw auger, and one plain auger.

I had one of these. Exactly the same. I'm not understanding the "augers" as you call them? Isn't the one installed a corkscrew? The others look like (top to bottom in the row) a plain screwdriver blade, a gimlet, another plain screwdriver blade, and a punch awl. Maybe I'm wrong, but that is what I have always called them.

Could be a corkscrew, since these are usually called "Gentleman's Kit". My experiences with corks seem to have always needed a larger diameter screw.

I have one too, same exact tool.   There is still some nickel plate over the brass.  I was thinking of the corkscrew, in that time period, many bottles had corks, medicine, linement, and many would have been a lot smaller than the wine bottle corks today.

Now that you mention the nickel plating, I see that the ends still show nickel, whereas the body has apparently lost all the plating.

I found one of these at an antique show in upstate NY this year.  Not in very good shape and I think it only had 3 tools.  It looked kind of "forlorn" laying on the table among all the dishes and other junk.  I didn't figure I could get hurt too bad at 2 bucks.
