Manzel-Buffalo 6085-AA & 6085-AB wrenches
« on: August 28, 2012, 07:16:45 PM »
I picked up two wrenches today from the pawn shop on the curiosity factor alone.  They are marked Manzel-Buffalo-6085-AA / and AB.

They appear to me as some sort of obstruction wrench.  The only information I could find leads me to believe they are a Ford service tool made by Manzel Tool; although I could not find any detail on the specific application or the Buffalo reference.  Does anybody know these two fellows and what they may be used for?

First guess would be head bolt wrenches

Head bolt wrench sounds reasonable. Heres a pic of a kent moore head bolt wrench for 1930-1940 cars and they have some similarities.

The numbers very much resemble partial ford part numbers for special tools, would guess late 40-s , early 50's, but I can not find that particular number (The AA , AB is signifigant btw)

...Yes, the samer Manzel, dunno over what exact period they used the buffalo suffix tho
Much earlier they also used an italic version of Manzel...

They seem to be a related pair, so perhaps connecting rod bolts rather than head bolts..
(Plus the top one has a ringed offset)
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

Thr top one looks like it's designed to go into a recess,a revised version of the first one.
My guess is a head bolt, with a bracket  attached.
Of all the things I've lost , I miss my mind the most

They are head bolt wrenches.  Extremely useful to retorque the bolts after warm up without removing the rocker shaft.  If one of them is 3/4", I would be interested in it.  I've used a crowfoot on an extension for this task in the past.

i have a few manzel ford tools. i believe manzel was located in buffalo new york hence the buffalo stamping. ford tools are numbered by the base part number of the part it is used on. IIRC 6085 is a head bolt. all engine part base numbers are in the 6000's.

I appreciate all the information put forth.  With a focus area, I found an item listed on Ebay titled "48-59 FORD LINCOLN MERCURY EDSEL MANZEL TOOL 6085A LH HEAD HOLDER PARTS COLLECT".  I have to think it is related somehow.

I would appreciate any help with interpreting the AA and AB codes.  So they are head bolt wrenches.  Would they have been for a specific engine, model(s), or more generally a time period?  Any ideas if they were for auto or tractor (other?)?

i believe manzel was located in buffalo new york hence the buffalo stamping.

That would explain it.  I was trying to tie it to another tool company....rather than a city.

If one of them is 3/4", I would be interested in it.

I believe (using my wife's sewing measure) they are both 7/8" flat-to-flat.  I would like to keep them around, at least until I find I don't need them as users.  I will keep you in mind should I part with them.

Heres a pic of a kent moore head bolt wrench for 1930-1940 cars and they have some similarities.

Thank you for the point of reference.

>6085A LH HEAD HOLDER

and 6085-C is a tool for installing the water outlet port in the head, that was the basis for my date guess, but I still can't find the reference for that exact tool number...

7/8 would be the correct head diameter for a heavy 1/2 bolt, which is one of the bolt sizes used on the heads for the pre 351 engines...

I did find reference in the 1949-1952 Master Repair Manual Engines to a Manzel 6085-C; specifically as it relates to the 279 and 317 ci engines and removal of the water port.

Still no luck on the AA and AB wrenches :(
