I need help dating this toolbox
« on: June 12, 2012, 06:19:09 PM »
Does anyone have a late 50's or early 60's Bonney Catalog? I have struck out trying to date the machinists chest that is currently not selling on ebay. I tried Kennedy Customer Service and she says that Kennedy never made boxes for Bonney. The interior is all painted Kennedy wrinkle brown, but the outside is semi gloss black and says Bonney on it. It sure looks like a Kennedy. The  1967 Bonney Catalog pdf shows a very simple toolbox with pulls formed into the drawer fronts. The 1947 Bonney pdf is pretty primitive by comparison. Not even close.

I can introduce you, but the rest is up to you.

That line was begging for a smartass remark.

Thanks Frank.  We met in the park about 2 weeks ago.  The romance has been smoldering since then. It has been on ebay for 2 weeks now and no bids. If it is unsold two days from now, I may take the affair to the next level and start sanding. Google images turned up this one on 'Home Machinist'. This makes me sure that it is a Kennedy. Mine may be a Bonney fake that was repainted and logoed by  previous owner. The photo below has fewer drawers, but the same design.

It IS a Kennedy, and I don't care if anybody dis-agrees.
I have several here like this for sale, but I have not advertised them.
I would surmise that yours would bring no more than 50 dollars plus shipping.
And the shipping cost will be 25 to 30 dollars.
I have NOT advertised any of mine.

John,

I have a Crafty machinest chest from the mid 1960's that looks identical to the Kennedy above.  Don't know if this helps you or not.  If you want, I can snap a pic or two and take some dimensions.

Your Bonney is bigger and has more drawers but shares all the main Kennedy design features, except for the lock.  It looks to be an generic replacement lock.

Whatever your box turns out to be, it's nice enough to be a keeper and could be refurbed as a nice vintage piece for next to nothing.  The old brown wrinkle finish that Kennedy boxes came with never did much for me; it's a look, but kinda drab and boring.

No, it says "Utica // BONNEY"

And the lock is correct, it looked like this: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=153725
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.
