Need help with 3 tools
« on: June 12, 2012, 01:49:28 PM »
These 3 tools have no name or number.  Does anyone know what they might be?
Thanks,
Barb

The first is a reamer to chamfer the top of a hole.

The second is an adjustable bit.  You change size by moving the spur.

And for certain,  The third is too blurry to see

Correction-  I can enlarge it enough to see, but how about a photo of the working end?

Agreed on all counts (except I can't enlarge the third item enough to see anything...)

The adjustable bit is often called an expansion bit...

The third gizmo looks more like a part than like a tool.  A push and turn to activate valve or switch handle. jmho

Your first seems to be a reamer

The second seams to be a adjusting width bit

And the third almost looks like a specilty key of some time. Ime not to sure on te thrid one thoe.

I want to say the 3rd tool may have something to do with a valve.

Can someone tell me if the adjustable bit is supposed to have something on the end of the handle?  The pictures I found looked like it had a tip of some kind on the end of the handle.  This one is just flat on the end.
Thanks,
Barb

Some have a tapered square shaft to fit into the chuck of a brace.  Some later ones are just round to fit into a 3 jaw modern chuck.  Some have the square portion cut off by a user to adapt them to later chucks.

The tapered reamer is often called a repairman's reamer.
They are also called other much less flattering names, along with repairmen who use them,
by machinists of all sorts.   They are kind of a shortcut tool offering no precision at all.
I do often use them to take a burr off a drilled hole though. Quick for that.

The expansion bit goes into a regular crank brace. When they are sharp they don't drill as precise a hole as a good auger bit, but they can still do an acceptable job.
The cutter in it is adjusted almost as short as it goes.  This bit will drill a 1 1/2" hole easy.
It probably came with another cutter as well.  A longer cutter.  it was customary to supply these bits with 2 cutters.
The long cutter will drill a 3" hole!!
I wouldn't want to try that on 2" thick rock maple, but on pine or something they work well enough.

No real idea about the last one. It almost looks like part of a faucet seat dresser set.

The third appears to be an orifice tube removal tool (for A/C systems, the orifice tube controlls the flow of refrigerant) The funny side notches grab a pin so you can pull it out....

Not sure which one tho, there are a whole bunch of different types...

The repairman's reamer is a tool I actually had to use twice this week at work to deburr mounting holes in a zinc diecast part.  They are a handy item to have. The one I have was manufactured by General.

I had one of those reamers when I was a kid, I had an egg beater drill, and 4 or 5 sizes of drill bits, which were never the right size, so all my holes were 'custom fit' --P
