ID'ing a Brace
« on: June 12, 2012, 11:47:41 AM »
Came across a pretty nice brace but can't find any numbers or letters on it,
so where would be the most likely place to look to get some ID on it?
Can take a pic if need be, didn't want to drag my camera out in the pouring rain earlier.

The pictures are too small to see any detail - and I'm no brace expert - but I'd guess PEXTO.

Ditto, need bigger pictures, particularly of the chuck and ratchet, as that is often the only thing that differentiates them....

PS: Look at the underside of the top knob for stamping in the metal, sometimes what you seek is there instead of on the rod parts....

Here you go, didn't know the small pics wouldn't enlarge.

I'll check the underside.

I found the markings, its a Craftsman 10 (?) made in the USA.
Not sure about the #10, had to use my jewelers loupe to see it.
Its got tiny nics and not sure about the 1, but definately a zero.
The lettering is funky lookin', almost looks like it was scratched in to it.
Any of this make sence.

OK, makes sense, would be 10 inch, and it matches pictures of others with that marking...

George's basement  has a somewhat similar one, and thinks, based on the chuck, perhaps made by Millers Falls, tho your chuck isn't precicely identical.....(The knurling is different, but MF changed their knurlling rather a lot, you can probably date it by that...)

Georges' has cocobolo handles....

(Average ebay offer price is $8-$25 btw...)

Could it be one of these red handled braces?
I can see just a touch of red left on mine.
Was thinking the lions brace.

There's a decent chance there will be a code on the brace that will indicate the manufacturer...

If you look closely can you see anything else besides Craftsman ?0?

All I saw was made in the USA, but will check again in the morning.

I would be willing to bet its mostly a Millers lion under her skirt.
Ordered by Sears with the Craftsman name, and some details cheapened with lesser materials and workmanship.  As Sears so often did throughout their history.
Other hardware chains usually left the products alone. Merely ordered marked with the hardware name.
But Sears demanded a rock bottom price and quality was almost always sacrificed at least somewhat.

I just checked it out very closely and there might be a B, but there are so many minute nics on it it may be just nics I'm seeing.

The code for Millers Falls would be an F in a circle....
