I've got to disagree with this. The drill bits used in braces are commonly called by their particular style, hence
Center bits
quill bits
gimlet bits
spoon bits
nose auger bits
hollow auger bits
counter sink bits
twist bits
and of course, auger bits.
The first five of these are the earliest bits used in a brace -- for a few hundred years. What is called an auger bit wasn't developed until the late 1700s.
To add to the confusion are the bits made for braces that are screwdriver bits and bits for square nuts.
Auger bits are what distinguish this kind of bit for a brace. "Brace bit" tells me nothing.
