Mitre Box Identification
« on: May 03, 2012, 09:29:36 PM »
Looking for some help to ID this hand saw mitre box that I got today. It's pretty old.  Here's a few photos.  There's a logo in the middle of the ruler but half of it is rubbed out so I can't make it out completely.  It's a shield.  At the top, outside of the shield it says Registered.  On the top inside of the shield it says Union Made.  On the outside right lower side of the shield it says Label.  Then there are vertical lines on the inside of the shield with some writing that I can't make out.  Looks like there is an A, M, and maybe an F or a B.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There was a company in Connecticut that made brace bits that had a shield logo that was marked Union Made.  I am pretty sure that it was W. A. Ives Co., and that the bits were usually marked with the Mephisto brand.

Does anyone know if a shield was commonly used on union labels?  I checked the EAIA Directory, and Ives made mostly bits.  A miter box would not make sense for them.  There was also a Mephisto Bit Co. that made bits that was probably related to Ives.

Good job on the miter box ad Rusty; it looks a lot like it.

Kedep in mind, the union label itself (Carpenters union) has a shield in it....

Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.
