German...nippers? + Malco hammer. Info anyone?
« on: April 15, 2012, 02:52:50 PM »
I got both of these at a flea market today. The Malco is in pretty nice shape, so I got it to use it. Appears to be a cast hammer? Does anyone have some info on the hammer? Good or normal find?

Second one really caught my eye. They are made by AF&C, stamped Germany. No other markings, besides the odd heart or possibly floral decoration.

Malco is still around, they make stuff for the sheet metal guys, roofing guys , and siding tools etc...

Your hammer doesn't have a fanvy vinyl handle, si I assume it's a decade or two older...

Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

Those nippers knock---me---out!
   I have never seen better.
Compound leverage and decorated too?
 Sha-zam!!

Ida died if I saw those at the swap meet.

    I suspect, for piano work.
Hardened spring wire.

Thanks Rusty, I won't feel bad about cutting down the handle than. I figured if it wasn't anything too special I would smooth the peen a little and use it for small texturing (small leaves, pedals, etc).

Scott, thanks for the info! They work smooth as butter too! I was pretty excited when I got them. I don't remember which price was on which, but it was either $5 or $6.

Good finds. Not real clear from photo but it does look like a tinners hammer, that we talked about not long ago.Don't know the brand but I think it is a drop forged hammer. After the exess metal (flash) is trimmed off the flash line is ground, some firms grind it completly away others not so much.  Most of the cast (iron) hammers were cheapies (pretend) tools or low stress hammers such as cobblers/shoe hammers. A touch on a belt sander should tell you whether it is iron or steel!?

Yup, I was happy when I recognized it, just didn't know a thing about the name. You're right on being drop forged- I just saw a slight flash and grinding marks and the first thing my mind went to was casting.... D'oh!
