Tools-Contour Gauge Question

Pics show what I found for $6 yesterday
The contour gauge has Germany marked on opposite side from side shown with ruler
That's about it for the gauge as far as marks. The chisel is a Buck Brothers
1-1/2" 12-7/8" Overall Length Has Link Hickory on Ferrule

It does not work freely or maybe that it is a good thing so that it retains the correct profile
My question is can you take these things apart for cleaning and get it back together

I have one that came apart dropped/knocked off bench and run over by something. A real pain in the butt to put back together.
Pins should slide but not easily come out. A good cleaning maybe derust if needed?

I agree with oldgoaly, you can take it apart, but putting it back together is hell.  Suggest cleaning it up and see if you can get it to work okay without taking it apart.

Thanks Guys-you have confirmed what I sort of suspected
This would be kinda like the old getting toothpaste back in tube deal
Will blast it with compressor and some more "red steel wool"
and see if that helps

You could try a vinegar soak for 24 hrs or so and then a WD40 bath.
May help free it up and I don't think it can hurt anything.

Or just soak it in a light oily fluid, like kerosene, for a day or two.  The trouble with a vinegar soak on something like that is that you won't be able to get inside the crossbar to neutralize the vinegar, so you'll actually aggravate the rust problem.

Good point Bill, but I should have said blow it out with air really well and then spray it with WD 40.

What is the type and brand of that pick?  It looks European.

Mike, I think WV is asking about the pick hammer, not the contour gauge.

The Pick has  US PAT   stamped on top.

The patent no. tells you that Ron Zabarte of California holds/held the patent
for "Ornamental Design-Combination Pick and digging tool" or words to that effect.
I don't get the Ornamental part; there are no flowers or scrolls
or anything else except the patent info marking the tool.
At 24" overall length and 10" length of head I thought it was a good
size for light duty around the yard. A little more digging seemed to
indicate that it was manufactured by Vaughn & Bushnell.
