Big Falcon wrench
« on: April 27, 2018, 04:23:52 PM »
Any idea on who made this big wrench? Early sized 3/4 x 5/8, which is closer to 1-3/8th x 1-1/8th. No forge mark, 11 inches long, just says Falcon. A little research shows Mossberg made a light bicycle wrench called the Falcon, and Williams made an early pipe wrench called the Falcon, but no one claims to of made a wrench line named Falcon.

That's an odd one. The only lead I  can give you is there was a tool Co. called Pope in Australia that used the Falcon name. I have no idea if there is any correlation.

Despite the sizes,  the depth of the number stamp and the Falcon name way up by the head just says to me, not made  in the USA.

Pope Products Limited ( in South Australia) produced a range of Hand tools (with the Falcon mark) which included Hand Drills, Multi-grip pliers, Bench planes, Spokeshaves and Spanner sets.
I have not come across a wrench like the one pictured, but have a set of the "Pope Australia" spanners, these are only stamped out of what appears to be flat plate.

At least you should be able to determine the markings, which as you said are "early size".   Here are decimal equivalents for Whitworth and British Standard:
5/8BS  =  1.010"
5/8W  =  1.100"
3/4BS  =  1.200"
3/4W  =  1.300"
The wrench openings will very likely match either the BS or W figures.
I did take a quick look at Grace's Guide to British Industry and did not see anything (but Grace's is a huge website).

Thanks Henri! My first pre-war British wrench... I needed a new obscure category of collectable wrenches to add to my growing hoard of vintage metal.
