ABC and DoReMi
« on: April 09, 2018, 09:01:16 PM »
DoReMi as in dough, money, cold hard cash.  A while back I bought a tool lot at an auction and in it were 4 very attractive chrome metric double open end wrenches.  Small wrenches with a relatively thin profile.  I thought it would be nice to find some more of them.  At the time there none for sale on eBay.  The wrenches are marked (A.B.C) and (DROP FORGED JAPAN).

Last weekend I bought a nice PM ratchet/socket set for $10 and I asked him to throw this A.B.C wrench in with it , which he did.  Just like the metrics but the chrome is a bit rusty.

So I looked on eBay again and this time there are several for sale.  The small metrics are $7 to $9 each and they are zinc plated, not chrome.  Another small inch wrench for $10.93 and one just like this one I got for $7.99 plus $4 shpg.  Another seller has the metric set of 4 listed at $99.00 - plus $6 shpg!!!  He is accepting best offers but even so!  (At that price he could afford to toss in the shipping).

So what is it with the prices of these wrenches?  Four different sellers.  If you just needed one to complete a set - maybe it might be worthwhile to pay $7 to $12.   These are nice wrenches but they are made in Japan.  I can't find much info on A.B.C.  There's an Italian ABC tool company that apparently supplies wrenches for Maserati but these are definitely a different company, different logo.  And the Maserati wrenches are selling for $365 a set/or $60-$70 each.

Can't help on the wrenches, but $60-70 for a wrench!  Are Maseratis so delicate that they'll fall apart if touched with a peasant-class wrench?  Oh, wait, they're Italian - of course they will!

Funny! Apparently anything associated with Maserati means money.  A scissors jack and bag is selling for $2100.  The expensive wrenches are made by an Italian firm named ABC - their logo is ABC in an oval with an arrow thru the letters.  It's a big company that makes a lot of very nice looking tools.  The wrenches look very nice and they're not clubs, they look quite usable, but they're not highly polished and the chrome looks cheap.
I wouldn't complain about owning a set, but these are not the ABC wrenches I'm looking for.

But then how will you maintain your Maserati?  Or are you a Ferrari guy?

Bill, who, if he were an Italian car owner, could only afford to be a 1960 Fiat 500 owner, or maybe a Vespa owner.

Yugo: so named because, when it's time to go somewhere, you go, but the car refuses.

True story:  I once knew a couple who owned two Yugos and pretty much kept them running.  And they owned a video rental shop that dealt only in Betamax tapes.

I bet their parents owned Edsels.
