More Than A Grease Gun?
« on: November 03, 2016, 09:11:08 PM »
I have what looks like an old grease gun, but I'm wondering if it could be something more. It's made completely of brass and has a fairly fancy plunger handle. The most unusual feature is a curved snout with a plain open hole in the end. I would like to know if anyone has seen an item like this and could shed some light on its purpose and history. Thanks.

For filling grease cups--pre grease zerks?
Grease cups are small containers with a threaded cap that are tapped into a bearing.  Fill them up and tighten the lid to force grease into the bearing.

The ORIGINAL Northwoods.

Could it be a suction gun - for removing and replacing oils/lube?

we had used one sort of like that many moons ago to remove old oil from the canister type oil filters.

remember the add on filters on the older automobiles that the auto makers saved money by not putting them on.

Also suction to remove lube from manual transmission cases, etc. -- did not always have an accessible drain plug at the very bottom of the case.

Based on some of the comments, I took a closer look at the tapered inlet/outlet end of what we now think is a hand pump. As can be seen in these new photos, there are a lot of thin, circumferential scratches or indentations in the top and bottom surfaces of the curved nozzle. looks like this may be evidence of the nozzle repeatedly coming into contact with the sharp edges of a threaded hole. I could easily see this happening when pumping fluid into or out of a gearbox or differential.
Thanks very much for the great replies. Please keep them coming, if there are any more thoughts. This forum is really amazing and I appreciate the help being provided.

It looks most specifically like a suction gun to pull oil/grease from a transmission or rear axle assembly.
