Lie Nielsen No. 9 Miter Plane
« on: September 23, 2016, 07:55:48 PM »
Hello, I found this today, along with a couple more Lie Nielsen planes. I wasn't sure what I had till I got home & did a little research. I believe this is a discontinued model, and are hard to find. I am guessing that I am missing the side handle. Does anyone know where I could find a handle for this? This is as found, I haven't even dusted it off yet!!!!!!!  Regards, Lou

What you found is a pile of money! That brand is too rich for my blood, so I can't shed any light on the handle. I'm sure someone has one for sale on eBay ... But I'm guessing it would cost a lot! Good find, dear!

This is patterned after the Stanley No.9. They had a removable aluminum handle that looked like a "hot dog" hence the hot dog handle moniker. I don't know if it came with your plane or if it was an accessory. Probably can find it on Lie-Neilson's web site. I do know that there are reproductions available for the Stanley. You might be lucky and find that they fit your plane.

The question is: do you get enough extra value out of your plane to justify buying the auxiliary handle for it. My guess is you are further ahead to clean it up a little and sell it with out the handle.

My two cents worth.

Hello, Mike. I found a sold listing on ebay, but the plane was never taken out of the package. There was a paper envelope envelope within that package, which I am guessing contained the side knob. I will do a very light cleaning today, get rid of the dust, & wipe down the steel parts, and oil the moving parts..I have no idea what to do with the bronze casting. Any suggestions? Thanks, Lou

I use some stuff called Simichrome, that you can get on Amazon. It does a good job on brass so I would think it would probably do ok on bronze. It's non abrasive so it won't leave any scratches.

The problem with some cleaners is they dry leaving a white or even darker colored residue and if the planes surface isn't polished smooth the residue will stay behind in the crevices. If you plan on selling it a lot of buyers want it in the un-polished/un-cleaned state. Wipe it down to clean the loose dirt off and let the new owner make the decision. Just my 2 cents. Great find either way.

I have a #9 Stanley plane that does have the hot dog handle. If I remember correctly it's about 3 1/2'' long and about 1" in diameter, It attaches to the body with 2 small set screws. I don't think it's aluminum, pretty sure it's steel and it is hollow. I' know that a reproduction could be made from a solid piece of round stock. I moved a while back and don't have all of my collection unpacked, my #9 is still in one of the many boxes.

Hello, All. Thanks for the info. I am going with caution, and only doing a dusting, and oil wipe-down of the steel parts, the rest will be as found. I believe this version of the Lie Nielsen No. 9 had a removable cherry knob for the side handle, casting is tapped on both sides for left or right use. I don't think (but I am not 100% sure), that this plane was ever offered with a hot dog handle. Does anyone know where I could get a replacement, or, reproduction, cherry knob and screw? Thanks again, Lou

Hi dear, lee valley makes a lot of good plane "replacement" parts. I think rockler does, too. Short of that, do you know someone that could turn a replacement part for you? Ive got the cherry, but not the skills :)

Hello, All. I contacted Lie Nielsen, and they have original replacement side handles & screws, in stock, for the old No. 9. I have one on the way. They were very helpful, the woman that I spoke with on the phone went out into the warehouse to make sure they had a complete assembly. Great customer service, great price, cheap shipping. Isn't that the way it's supposed to work???? Regards, Lou
