Something you don't find every day...
« on: September 16, 2015, 05:01:50 PM »
So here's an interesting box I found in a lot I bought at auction... Car-mover Spurs for railroad cars. In their original box no less.

I've never heard of any such thing... but the little diagram on the side of the box makes it look like they help keep the train car on the tracks. They must be hella high carbon steel... Might try to forge one, and maybe make some damascus :P

The company has a website - http://www.advancecarmover.com/railroadrailcarmovers.aspx
These pieces look to me like they fit in a leverage tool and they bite into the car wheel to get it to turn. (?)
"Advance Car Mover Co. has been manufacturing quality tools for 100 years."

Badgers? We don't need no stinkin badgers!

Haha, nice link!

How interesting.... I think they bite into the rail, rather than the wheel though. There is an animated image of the Power King car mover, but the Badger 249 one isn't animated... I think the spur is the little part at the bottom, cropped into quarter rounds in the image... But the image for the spurs shows them on the rail... If they are made to bite into railroad rail, they must be REALLY high carbon :D And, $20 a pair?!? I've got $140 worth of them! :P

Ad selling chocks shows the same spurs and says- "A Sure Grip

In 1955 Aldon Co introduced cast steel chocks with the unique feature of replaceable spurs (or teeth).  The spur is the key to effective rail wheel blocking.  Under wheel pressure the spur bites into the hard, smooth surface of the rail to keep the chock from sliding. spurs and chock showing square and beveled ends
A Longer Useful Life

When the spur becomes dull from use it can be removed and turned to a fresh edge three times.  You never have to throw an Aldon wheel chock away!  When the spurs are used up, just order new ones at nominal cost and you’re back in business."
