Questions about this hand vise?
« on: July 02, 2015, 09:07:32 AM »

This hand vise has no markings on it but looks exactly like Millers Falls W.X. Stevens 1869 Pat. Hand Vise Clamp http://www.ebay.com/itm/Millers-Falls-W-X-Stevens-1869-Pat-Hand-Vise-Clamp-/281645202073?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item41935cba99 with the execption of the removable handle with the tang end and it is an inch longer. Any input is appreciated.

I don't think it's Starrett as they used a sliding lever like on a big vise.  It could be Standard Tool Co. since they made one like you picture but the one I have doesn't have the screw to hold the handle to the vise shank.  I've never seen that feature before.  Does it look like it was made that way or maybe an owner modification?

The tang seems consistant on all four sides, but the hole drifts off center through the bottom. What would be the purpose for the tang.

Use it in a brace as a wrench.

To twist wires together a brace would be quicker tgan by hand.

Even quicker  twisting, double the strands together, fasten one of the ends in a vise and chuck the other in a cordless drill. That makes some pretty twisted wire fast.
