Tool Identification HELP ME PLZ :)
« on: April 11, 2015, 12:46:25 PM »
I have some tools that need identification help if you can plz...

The first is a ratchet made by Herbrand Model No. J-12. I do know it is missing its end cap. I assume it looks like a tool that could be used to aid in distributor removal. This ratchet not found in the two Herbrand catalog PDF files I have. Any application information would be helpful

Thanks in advance,
Jack

2nd is a Herbrand Socket Model No. J-41. I have no idea of its application, if i had to guess it would be some type of adjustment socket say like for a carburetor to adjust fuel mixture. BUT that is a guess...

Thanks in advance,
Jack

UPDATE...

Found this on the Net from a 1941 Herbrand Catalog

3rd is a tool made by Dorman Products CIN OHIO Pat. Pend. I was told by Dorman that it is a grease cap removal tool... HOWEVER! I did not talk to the man on the phone who knew the answer and the one who told me never asked this man what the application was used on. AND the kicker is the man I talked too is out of town for the next three weeks! LOL

Thanks in advance,
Jack

Okay the mystery solved on the Herbrand J-41 Socket its application was to remove oil pan screws on Chevrolet vehicles. Found this information on page 157 or 80 of the scanned 1937 Herbrand catalog. Attached is also the Snap-on version No.F-9

This is from a 1941 Herbrand Catalog page 15. Sorry about the quality this is how I found it. Cropped it a bit to get size down to 250kb.  Enjoy!

Looks like it is entirely possible that your rachet never had a cap.

Yadda,

According to the catalog, you could either purchase it with or without the cap and it also had several other options available to it! Guess I need to start looking. I bought this ratchet from a guy in Fremont, Ohio as I only live about 50 miles away. I guess his dad worked for Herbrand at one point. When I got the ratchet it was not working, I took it apart and cleaned it, the grease inside became hard. I cleaned and used 30w oil to re-lubricate it. I bought out his entire Herbrand collection it included the Ratcheting Spark plug socket as well!

I've post a better picture of that catalog page below.
