Bummer finds @ The Townsend Dump
« on: September 20, 2011, 10:22:46 PM »
Was taking the last of the long weekend trash to the dump on Sunday and spotted a couple of items in their "Scrap Metal" pile.  One was an old JC Penney 2 drawer metal tool box and an old Powr-Kraft 7 1/4" power  circular saw.  The gal running the dump that morning said she'd get fired if she let me have either or both and wouldn't even sell them to me.   I was crushed.......

Maybe she had plans for them herself.....sorry wasn't there long enough to get photos

Maybe you could talk to somebody at the dump.   It could make them more money.  The Sonoma dump has several employees that just work the recycle area and they do a brisk business there.  They now have a second hand shop in Santa Rosa with its own employees.  Prices are cheap, stuff doesn't go into the landfill, and people regularly shop both places.   I recently bought a mountain bike for $15 -- had to put air in the tires (and get rid of the spiders and spider webs).

Times like these, I'd think additional income would be interesting to them.

I've picked things out of the containers in the recycle area -- no problem.  If somebody wants to buy it, they're willing to take their money.   I got a Bridgeport nail puller in near new condition from the 2nd hand store, and a 1950 thumbhole Disston, and both had been pulled from a container by the gal who runs the 2nd hand shop.

I've just found out that there are a couple of dumps near Sacramento that have similar operations, but I haven't been to look yet.

They wont let you pull it out because they are recycling it themselves, I learned not to even ask, I just jump in and once I am in whatever I am pulling out is going home with me like it or not.
Always looking for what interests me, anything early Dodge Brothers/Graham Brothers trucks ( pre 1932 or so ) and slant six / Super six parts.

This dump is really small and all the scrap metal is on the asphalt at the back.  In the future, I could use my wife to distract the dump lady and I could sneak stuff in the car, but we're only up there once a year and I've been fortunate in the finds I did get up there.  Don't wanna be greedy......
