My new picks
« on: April 19, 2015, 04:39:52 AM »

Went to several garage sales this morning, started slow, a few $1. items (Craftsman 20' tape rule, multy-tool, etc.)
The wife went on a buying spree for the grandkids.. (checked out last weeks "Moving sale", but they must have moved)  then last place off of "Von Hamm Young's" property.. found some OLD tools, this family's great Grandpa was a blacksmith way back when.. they were bringing out tools as they could from his work shop.  I Check in back, had very old wall mounted hand-crank drill press, Blacksmith vice with leg in concrete, old hand crank (14") grinding wheel with seat. and this was just outside the door to his shop..  the grandson would go in back, load up a box with tools, bring it to the garage, put it out for display, try to price them, then go back for more tools..  I must have been there 3 hours waiting for each new box of tools, then grabbing what I wanted to put aside.. finally he got tired, said that's all.. Got set of 28 brace drills, drill extension, Stanley Brace & angled Brace?, 2x 12" Draw Knifes, blacksmith tongs, nipper, hammer, 2 saw-sets, some special pliers, 2x 8" C-clamps, bunch of measuring tools, dividers, micks, tapered wedge scale, In-lbs torque wrench USAF. 5-180 in/lbs., bunch of hammer drill bits. metal hole plug cutters, Aluminum pipe wrench (Ampco?), a 8" monkey, and a bunch of other tools with a wooden tool box.. ended up paying $100 for everything..  They were happy.. I didn't feel too bad..

the angle brace had tape over the gearing, but when I removed tape, looked OK. guess tape was just padding to protect something..

Nice stuff!

It's such a great feeling to save some century old tools that will probably end up in the scrapper if a collector like you didn't grab them.

Thank you Bonneyman..

I have been looking for Draw knifes for over 10 years, (since I retired), 1st. time I seen any in Hawaii, (other than specialty woodworkers stores, they start at $60.00 + for a 6")..
1st time I seen a Corner Brace-Drill anyplace in Hawaii. (including antique & Pawn shops.)  Glad I could get my hands on them..

Anyone know how to use the silver Saw set, has a dial piece with numbers around it, looks like it should set different angles but the beveled edge doesn't seam to change much..

Also; the multy-tool, seen it here someplace but?  that punch/crimper tool, assume for leather work, eyelets, snaps?

Went back today to see if they brought anything new out..
most tools were sold, Like some very old sharpening stones (looked like they were cut out of a quarry, set in large wood blocks..
A bucket of large files, dozen or so..  bunch of clamps, all gone..  Took some photos of the Drill Press, Vice, & Grinding wheel..
& some of the tools they had left..

Picked up some Tapered Taps, #20, 14, 14L, larger 14 & 14L,  looks like the "L" is Left hand threads, assume tapered Taps are used with wood? tightens as you turn..  also brace bits flat screwdrivers & a tapered square.. and a Starrett machinist engineering gage #245, still sealed in wrapper & box..

last photo is what I got yesterday $1 ea.
