Socket Case Idea
« on: March 30, 2015, 11:23:26 PM »
Hey Everybody,

I'm new to this forum and joined because I think I have a good idea and am looking for validation from other tool users. A common problem that I see with people who use sockets (including myself) is the manageability and clearness of their respective cases. A lot cases have issues including unclear labeling, disorganized rows, as well as it being generally difficult to remove the sockets from their holders. My idea (I am currently in a 3D printing class and an Entrepreneurship class) is to create a case with clear labeling and an easy organization system. I have attached pictures of my initial mockup for this idea. Basically, it would be a two part case that can be easily stowed in a larger toolbox, but also attached to one another. On top of the block would be a rail on which you would be able to slide hexagonal socket holders onto (each one clearly labeled with the size of the socket in the middle). Tell me what you guys think and I am here to answer any clarifying questions.

So the sockets attach open side down with drive side up, may have different clearance between 6 & 12 point sockets on your holder, what secures them? a detent? rubber friction?

Re-inventing the wheel in my opinion. I see lots of wasted space.
Not stackable, I assume.

I agree that there seems to be a lot of space needed for this system.  Space in my tool boxes is critical.
Also you will need to cast 13 different part numbers as holders.  If you made them hold the square drive you would only have to cast one part number per drive size.
One thing I don't like about certain tool holders is when you have to pull the tool off the holder.  It sometimes needs two hands - not always available.  I prefer trays, they stay in place and come right out when needed.

I have problems with typical socket racks. I like trays also, but you can't see whereythe missing one goes. I like the idea of hex keepers to put the socket on. It is real easy to, pull out a socket by putting an extension or drive tool into the drobe side.

So I agree that space is alaays at a premium, but if these were mounteabtrsa gradually widening tray they wouldnt need to take up unecessary space. If the tray had a lip, or of it had a diagonally mirrored tray itciould fit over a tool box orntray lip.

As a person who has hand difficulties, I see the start of a solution to the crappy or too tight socket racks. Good for you.
