At first I thought the removable tray was an afterthought, but the metal etc. seemed of similar gauge and texture, and it fits in there PERFECTLY, so maybe it was spozed to be there. With the side handes, no top handle, and only a hasp for locking, I doubt seriously if this was ever designed to be portable. As an aside, my conversation with the auctioneer led me to believe that the heirs didn't want any of the tools from the estate, so either this box was a gift that never got used , or maybe it was bought at an auction prior to me getting it. I combed the entire batch of hay racks and beer flats and only fond 2 Plomb screwdrivers on the entire premises. The wood handles had been painted black, and yes, I bid and won that flat too. IT was a lot cheaper than the tool chest.....lol
