Barcalo wrenches
« on: November 14, 2014, 12:56:11 PM »
This is a group of 9 convex shank doe Barcalo wrenches that I've been collecting for many years. I think that I'm still short at least one size. The sizes shown are as follows; 1 x 15/16, 7/8 x 25/32, 3/4 x 5/8, 11/16 x 19/32, 5/8 x 9/16, 9/16 x 1/2, 1/2 x 7/16, 7/16 x 3/8 and 13/32 x 5/16. The wrenches get progressively smaller in a uniform fashion until you get to the bottom of the picture. It looks to me like there should be another wrench between the bottom two. Size wise it would most likely be 3/8 x 13/32 or 3/8 x 5/16. If anybody has one that would fill the gap I sure would be interested in a trade or an outright puchase. I do have several of all the sizes listed if anyone is interested in a trade.

Barcalo also made a 5/16” x ¼”  but I don't know if it was in the style you want.

JohnK may be able to assist in the set construct.  I believe he is actively seeking to assemble the same set.

I see these from time to time, but usually in the 5/8 size.   I am trying to build a set of New Britain, 1950s .

John, what do they look like?  I have a few New Britain's.

I have a couple of Barcolo's in the style that  gibsontool is looking for but unfortunately not the sizes.

Thanks for the help guys. I tried that patent search that Charles Garrett suggested but it pulled up a patent for an improvement in extension scaffolds that was filed back in the 1870's by a fellow named Asel Sweet from Westfield Pennsylvania. I found that by just entering the numbers without the DES in front of them. When I put in the letters and numbers together nothing at all comes up. Alloy Artifacts does refer to that patent number when they show this particular wrench but the make no mention of what sizes were made. I am not very computer literate so maybe that's why I'm not having much luck. I'll get my son to help me next time I'm at his place.
john k maybe you could post a picture of the New Bitains your looking for,I think I may have one or two around here someplace.

Gibsontool, click on the link below for your design patent.  Just use a "D" in front of the number and it will work ok.

I have been stumbling along with trying to fill out this set.  Circa 1948-1953, New Britain, NDF, but you will find most all NB wrenches are NDF prefixed.  I started out with two some years ago, and now have most a set of combination box/open.   Along the way and thru some of the guys here have also acquired the combination open ends, combination box ends, combination box end offset, and the thin tappet wrenches.   Just discovered there were also combination box end very short.  Am missing some sizes in these combination box/open,  3/8, 13/16, and anything above an inch.  The five or six on the bay right now are all sizes I have.   In the late 30s there was a similar style marketed  with a single raised bar, and gotten over a dozen of this style.  Got them out in the shop right now, and baby it is cold outside!  If someone has one of either of these styles, I will bundle up and go check.   Let's see, also have a collection of S wrenches, a few Barcalo,  and some Kraeuters, of the diamond K design.   Did I mention my set of 1947 Craftsman?
