My arms reach bench hammers
« on: November 11, 2014, 02:07:47 AM »
For the last year or so I have been talking about sharing my bench hammers with this group.  I finally got them down from my bench.  These are just the Fretz hammers and metal hammers, not including ball peins and other common hammers or plastic formers / mallets.

Most I bought new. The first few pictures are my Fretz silverworking users. Stainless steel heads, easy to polish. Feel great when pounding.

The others next.....

Next some others.  Many larger metal movers. Not larger like blacksmith's. Larger for such a little guy like me.

Next, something for Twilite,

Chilly

Here are the ones I don't use much. Some never. All acquired used... except the Estwing crack hammer....
These are too big for most silverwork...

And another angle to show their curves.....

The last one on the right in the 2nd picture  has a solid steel bar for a handle. I was using it to bust up some junk, let go of it and hit myself above my left ankle, to the inside side. It swelled up and had a couple of cuts. I never felt anything, just like Mr. Deeds.

Thats my problem - I dont have feeling there at all. I felt a vibration in my upper leg, I thought it had hit the concrete. Looked down and saw the blood soaking through my sock and the area starting to swell.

If I had nerves in my hands I never would have dropped the maul.

Hahaha, how did you fit a hammer head on those long skinny squash? :P

But, in all seriousness, I've never seen a hammer handle quite like that o.o Very unusual to my eyes, though perhaps not to your specialty...

That... sounds very painful... lucky you didn't break your leg!

Those handles are very comfortable.  Unlike blacksmithing,  silversmithing is tapping.  Tappy tap tap..

And as far as the pain goes, that requires sensory nerves, and mine have been dying off for 24 years. I don't gave any at all from halfway down my shin to the end if my feet. Numb from above my knee to where they stop.  Working its way up my hand and arms now too.  It sounds bad, but mostly you just end up laughing about it.
