Walden Worcester ratchet-socket set No. 6
« on: May 02, 2013, 03:40:16 PM »
This set arrived yesterday sans ratchets, which I supplied.

Cleaning up the set and its box was the real story. Murphy's Oil Soap and a toothbrush to clean the wooden socket rack and its pegs; rug cleaning foam and a towel to clean a century of black greasy stuff off all box surfaces; steel wire wheel to get outside socket surfaces clean, followed by a light brass wheel turn to restore shine; dishwasher detergent in a large coffee can of very hot water into which sockets were put, and vigorously shaken to wash out grime inside the sockets; and finally, Minwax paste wax to finish sockets and box surfaces.

My impression of this kit is that it was an inexpensive tool kit offered to folks like first-time automobile owners of limited means.  It probably priced somewhere below the Mossberg No. 13 box.  The 25/32 socket in this set is split, but the steel is thicker than the same-sized intact socket in the Mossberg set.  Conclusion: Mossberg might have used better steel.

Just saw one of those small ratchets listed on eBay. I don't remember if the listing stated a maker or not. Nice set Bob
