Hennepin roofing hatchet
« on: January 26, 2013, 01:14:50 PM »
Love to rehab old tools, specially hatchets, mauls, knives, etc. today i,found a vintage roofing hammer. A garage sale item with th original  handle in good shape. filed an edge on it an wire wheeled the rust and dirt away and what a beauty. Forge marks, gret heft. Stmped HENNEPIN. Surprisingly Google gave me nada.Anybody known of a Hennepin Forge? I guess this tool to be 75 yers old.
Thank you,

Can't help directly, but Hennepin is a common name around Minneapolis/St. Paul, since Minneapolis is located in Hennepin County...although a little Googling teaches me the name shows up in New York and Illinois, too.

Lots of small manufacturers, and even more companies that sold tools badged under their name and produced by someone else.  You might, though, track down the historical societies in areas where "Hennepin" is an important place name and see if they have any records of a relevant business.

The EAIA Directory of American Tool Makers does not list anything by that name.  They are usually an excellent resource for this kind of research.  Are you positive it is Hennepin?

By the way, welcome to Tool Talk!

Thanks for the welcome. Their may be an imprint on the reverse but it is unreadable. There was a Hennepin Roofer Co. Is it possibe they stamped their tools to keep them from wandering off? Again thanks. It is a pleasure to be here.
