“I started accumulating old hand tools for my woodworking business, and it kind of got out of hand. But in self-defense, we started having these sales,” he said. “From that point on, I was hooked.”Dowd and two friends host antique tool sales twice a year in the courtyard of his home. He does an occasional tool show at the Ginger Man in Austin.Dowd’s home contains cabinets and shelves full of memorabilia, old toys, old guns and tools — “just a sample of what’s out back,” he said.Boy, did that turn out to be an understatement.Out back is an 1,800-square-foot workshop filled with his collections. One area is organized like a store for people to browse things like old books and magazines on tool collecting. Hand tools with vintage wooden handles sit on tables and behind glass. Machinist chests are lined up like fine train luggage.Visiting the back area comes with about five disclaimers about the lack of order and quantity of sawdust.“Hey, if I try to organize, I’m dead in the water,” he said.
