Pipe Threader
« on: September 19, 2012, 09:00:19 AM »
I have a American Pipe Tool pipe threader.
On the top where it opens to put the die it has printed on it "American Pipe Tool Chicago No/12." This belongs to a friend and it belonged to his Dad.This threader has 5 square dies.I am trying to find out a date of how old it is and also what it might be worth. Thanks

I'm unable to find any information that might help you date the tool.  Nothing on AA, no adverts. notta via google search, no description information pulled from ebay sales of the same, nothing really that I could find on the web....period.

Hopefully somebody will come along with information for you.  I could guess, but that wouldn't help you much.

  Candy is dandy
 but liquor is quicker
hehehheehehheheheh

Its a Walworth tool. The great pipe wrench company.  Stillson worked for Walworth.  At the time it was common for employers to generally rip off employees who invented things while working for them. Old man Walworth never tried. The wrenches were always marked Walworth, but the hook jaw had the Stillson name on every one.  This is why we know the name Stillson.

Probably ordered with this name on it (American Pipe Tool), by one of the big Chicago hardware firms.  The swing open gate/keeper gives it away. I have one just like it except mine says Walworth.

It only has one bushing. It was supposed to have one for each die. These guide the pipe in straight so you need one for each size pipe.

I have no evidence of its date. I am going to WAG 1880's.  As soon as the insert cutters were invented, solid dies faded away very quickly.
