Strange handle on a monkey wrench.
« on: August 23, 2012, 10:55:49 AM »
I was looking through some of my boxes yesterday looking for something and came across this old Monkey wrench I had forgotten about.  It rusted to what appears to be fatal, but we will see.  Anyways tho only marking on it that shows is a 7/16" Capital A on it.  I think the reason I picked it up in the first place was the "Twisted" handle.
I think when I get a little time, I will try to remove the rust with Electrolysis. That seems to work well.

One thing is for sure, the electrolysis isn't going to hurt it any.  I believe some of these were made by Acme.

I saw one in an antique store in great shape, but I'm sure it was redone.
They had $15 on it the owner said he had two more sizes to match it.
It was about 10-12 inches I believe.

I have seen them from about 5 inches long with a plain loop handle all the way up to 21 inches long. Acme did make some of them.

ACME was an early brand name applied to these.  In this example, the "A" stands for Agricultural -- there was a heavier grade marked "R" for Railroad.
See DATAMP entry for patent no. 273,170  (http://www.datamp.org/patents/advance.php?pn=273170&id=13766&set=24).

That patent information is pretty neat,  thanks.

Seems like I've seen ratchets with handles like that, can anyone confirm this?

I don't recall any ratchets with a twist handle like that.

I have seen ratchets with a wire loop handle (like a giant diaper pin) , but not with a twisted wire handle....

Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

Havn't heard that word for a long time, " Diaper pin ".

It would be neat to have a poll to see how many youngsters
knew what it was.
