hot water heater
« on: January 29, 2012, 10:16:26 PM »
Well, I still haven't made it to hot water status. It's been over a week since this whole mess started.  I'm getting closer to hot water.  I drained the old tank, moved it to another end of the shop, and got the new one into the shop.   I suppose that's progress. IN the meantime, I can wash most of my body in cold water..... but, I haven't braved sticking my head under cold water.....   it's a great case for me "buzz cutting"  my hair. But, even though I'm 34 years old, I still succumb to my folks on matters that are (for some odd reason) important to them. They were not at all happy when I "buzzed cut" my hair.  It actually upset mom.  I don't like to upset my mom....  I've put her through too much.  I'm not sure why should would care... it's just hair.   But, I suppose if mom is really that disturbed by short hair, I can appease her by having hair longer then an inch!!!!
But, I think I'd prefer being bald.....  ok, that's a bit much, but, really short hair.  Normally, in January, I let my hair grow out as long as it can.  It's a practical issue.  It's cold in the winter......  long hair,  and it's hot in the summer..... short hair.
Anyhow, I thought that it was a great idea to talk about hair cuts (yeah, I don't know what gets into me!!!!!!!  At least you folks that the one "constant" about me is inconsistency.
cheers,

All I can say is set your water heater thermostat properly.
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

Our water locally is so bad water heaters are always going out. I've been lucky with my current unit, but it's only 8 years old and I keep the anode rod good and keep it drained and cleaned out. That seems to help some. And, the hotter we run ours the faster mineral scale seems to build up. So, to keep those (and the bill) to a minimum, we keep it set as low as we can.
Taking cold showers.....in the winter?????? I can't imagine that. Guess some of you old war birds could tell us a story or two, eh?

My good friend in Calif has to fire up his wood stove to make hot water. His wood stove has coils in the firebox that heats the the water that gets stored in a large steel tank that sits next to the stove. The bad part is if it's in the summer time and hot in the house. No AC in the house ,so it gets pretty hot in the house at bath time or when it's time to do the dishes.

Four years in Tanzania, East Africa back in the Sixties- what's a shower?
Oh, in the rainy season, go outside and get clean.
Actually, in the first house I lived in in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, we had a water tank on the roof and a hand pump on the well. The houseboy would fill that tank by hand each morning so we could bathe in a tub, but no shower.
I should admit that we had no winter there, just 4 seasons- Short Rains, Short Dry, Long Rains, and Long Dry.

OK, I get it.  I am lucky to have hot water.  It's actually not a big deal.  As of today, it's been a few weeks since I've had hot water.  The kitchen sink no longer produces water.  But, I cooked a good meal today..... boiled potatos from the bathroom sink!   I'm thankful for what I have .
cheers,
bird.

HMMM, to bad that bathroom sink didn't boil the potatoes on its own!!!!!  That one bathroom was the only water source I had!!!!  But, hopefully, if all goes right this evening, I should have hot water soon.  Everything is hooked up now.  I'm just waiting for the tank to heat up....  wish me luck
cheers,
bird
