Raiding the Pawn Shop Again
« on: January 12, 2012, 11:40:11 AM »
Got some of the honey-dos taken care of and had time to cruise the local pawn shops last weekend.  The old boy east of town took all his old wrenches etc to a local auciton house down the street and they had a big auction in Mid December.  I chose to work instead of go, but most of what he had was not worth bidding on.  The two chain store pawn shops have both thinned out their tool sections, but poking through their sockets and wrenches, I was able to come up with a few goodies.  They had two Plomb 9/32" items behind the glass for 30% off their combined $9 retail and and a "no name" 9/32" flex over that their bar code label covered up "Armstrong", so I got all three for like $9.  VG condition too.  In the bone pile, I found a Challenger 3/8" ratchet for like .50, and eventually the guy just made a package deal.  I grabbed a 30% off IR 1/2 impact gun that was labeled $20 and the total bill was around $35.  the IR wouldn't even remove a lug nut, so I took it back and went up the road to their competitor(yes, I did get a 7 day warranty on it) and found an 800ft. lb MAC impact wrench for $120 and decided to buy it and it really does the job and is under 90 decibels.  GJ folks said this MAC is made in China, but is really a re-badged Air Cat, which apparently is highly regarded.

The MAC website says the retail on the 612Q is $384.  Not sure how many get sold at that price.  For what was out there new for $100 and change, this was a helluva deal IMHO.  My old 12v shade tree Chinese made $10 impact gun(ran off the car battery) loosened more than it's share of rusty bolts and nuts, but it died a week or so a go after like 4 years of abuse.

Now to acquire a compressor worthy of powering the tool.....

For a period of time Facom (French company) owned S-K.  Then Stanley bought Facom, as the managers of S-K bought out the French.
