pounce wheel, track over a paper drawing  some use  chalk to  go thru the holes and  it leaves a trace.

Exactly!   Also, could use it with carbon paper & no chalk.

Remember my mother tracing over paper dress patterns,  leaving dotted lines on the cloth, when sewing.
